Manly Beach & The Opera

DSC_0438
The other day, Suzanne and I had a lovely day & night out. During the day we went to Manly Beach & Sydney Harbour National Park – North Head and at night we found ourselves at a show in the Sydney Opera House. I have to admit my first experience of the opera was rather enjoyable.
Manly Beach

We took the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly. It roughly takes about half an hour and you get some spectacular views of the city skyline. Once we arrived at the Manly Wharf, we took the short walk down to the beach, browsing in a few shops on the way. Unfortunately it wasn’t the weather for a beach day, it was pretty dull, but we still took a walk along it. Such a gorgeous stretch of sand, I can imagine in the height of summer it would be swarming with people wanting to relax or surf. We only spent about 20 minutes walking on the sand before heading towards the Sydney Harbour National Park – North Head.

Sydney Harbour National Park

We walked up towards the National Park along a path on the cliffs just past Shelly Beach. Looking out to the Tasman Sea and back along the beach was absolutely stunning. I can’t wait til its hot enough to take a dip. Our path took us through an area which looked like it had been victim to a bush fire, all the trees were like charcoal. It was pretty daunting to see the aftermath of what a bush fire can do. The picture looks like its been edited but I swear it hasn’t.

We then stumbled across some gun pits from decades ago, the area had been used by the military. After walking further up the path we came to army barracks from the Vietnam War Era (I think). After walking a bit more of the path we came up to the North Fort Artillery Museum but it was late in the day and we decided to turn back and go back to the hostel.

The Turk In Italy

Suzanne has a relative that stays in Sydney and it just so happens she works in the Opera House. So on our way back from Manly she got a message offering free tickets to see the show that night – The Turk In Italy. Of course we snatched up the tickets, not everyday you get to see a show at the Sydney Opera House free of charge! By the time we got back to the hostel and changed into the nicest clothes we had, it was time to head back down towards the Opera House.

Upon arrival, we tried to pick up our tickets at the box office only to be told we should be at the VIP box office – jackpot! No idea what we got for being ‘VIP’ though. The show itself was actually enjoyable – a sentence I never thought I’d say. It was funnier than I thought it would be, with a lot of dirty humour. At the interval we even got ourselves a wee glass of wine each. The whole show lasted about 3 hours, safe to say my backside was numb. Overall though it was an amazing experience to get inside the Sydney Opera House and actually see a show.

Thanks for reading,
Alzo
