What To Pack For Long Term Travel

When you’re going on a holiday for a few weeks or whatever, you pack accordingly to the location and duration. Packing to go travelling for 6+ months is totally different. You’re going to experience different cities, seasons and temperatures. Along the way, you’re going to probably purchase new clothes as well. So, with that being said here’s my advice for what to pack for long term travel…

Rucksack or Suitcase?

I’ll start off with a question that I troubled with when I first began travelling… should I take a rucksack or suitcase? There are pros and cons to both. I would personally, through experience, choose a rucksack. It’s not as as bulky as most suitcases and can be easier to travel with – all you need to do is throw it on your back and you’re away. There’s no need to worry about the wheels loosing balance or dragging it through dirt. Rucksacks also have a lot of different pocket compartments that can come in useful when you want to store chargers and other important items that you don’t want to rummage through everything for.

With that being said, suitcases are more easily opened and organised. Unless… you get one of the rucksacks that opens like a suitcase. Having a suitcase would be more useful if you were planning on staying in places for an extended period of time instead of a few days/weeks. It’s all down to personal preference though, as long as you can pack your belongings and get to your next destination hassle-free!

Clothes

This is what I found difficult, I was going from the winter in New Zealand to the summer in Australia so I had to pack accordingly. Meaning… I packed a little bit of everything. I like to think I achieved that AND I managed to pack light as well. People going travelling often wonder if they should pack light or not. My advice would be to pack light(ish) with enough clothes to last at least a week before you have to wash them. For example, this is what I packed;

  • Underwear & Socks x8
  • T-Shirts x6
  • Long Sleeve Shirts/ Tops x2
  • Jeans x1
  • Shorts x2
  • Rainjacket x1
  • Jumper/ Zip Hoody x1
  • Trainers x1
  • Walking Boots x1
  • Outdoor Trousers x 2

Saying that, it does all depend on where you are planning to travel to and what kind of adventures you plan on having. If you’re like me, you’ll pick up new clothes along the way as well. So when older clothes start getting worn out, you can just throw them in the bin.

Toiletries & First Aid

Toiletries are different for every person. Don’t worry if you forget anything, you can always buy it when you’re away (unless you’re going to a place that isn’t near civilization). Start off with you’re necessities and work from there. At some point you’re going to run out and have to buy more anyway. As for first aid, you should always pack the simple things, no matter where you go. You never know when you’ll get a cut and need sterilized wipes and plasters/ band-aids.

Accessories

Everyone has a mobile phone these days so it would be wise to pack a multi-country charger to save yourself some hassle moving between different countries. Laptops and cameras aren’t essential but if you’re keen on photography and are trying to run a travel blog, like me, then take them along. It helps with organizing itineraries and it kills boredom too! I’ve recently purchased a drone so I can get some aerial footage for my vlogs (Alzos Adventures YouTube). Again, not a necessity but I thought it would be useful.

Other than that, I don’t know what else to say about packing for long term travel, everyones adventure is different. It really all depends on where you are headed. This is just a rough guideline of what I would recommend from my own personal experiences.

I hope you enjoyed this post and found it helpful in some way. Have you got any advice on what to pack? Let us know in the comments below!

Alzo
