My First Week In Sydney

So that’s me been in Sydney for a week now. Time has flown by. I’ve not really been up to that much, just done a lot of walking around trying to find my way about the city. Mind you, I have done a few tourist-y things. This week, I’m going to knuckle down and work on my blog and try get myself a job.

Accommodation in Sydney

For my first 2 nights, I stayed at the Secret Gardens Backpackers Hostel. The hostel is located on Cleveland street and about 2.5km from the city centre. If I’m honest, I never really enjoyed my stay there but I reckon it would be a lot better in summer. Though I can’t really complain for $23 a night. I then booked myself into Ady’s Place and I have stayed there since. For $20 a night, the hostel is lovely. The city centre is only about 1.1km away too. For the foreseeable future, I’ll be staying at Ady’s Place. Hostels in Sydney aren’t really that expensive unless your after a double room or somewhere really fancy.

A LOT of walking

I covered quite a few steps in my first week. I mean over 100,000. I’ve pretty much went up and down every street of Sydney CBD at least twice. Also, I’ve taken a few walks to Mrs Macquaries Chair – amazing view of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, especially at sunset. I’ve explored quite a bit really, mostly trying to navigate and learn my way. I quite enjoy being in Sydney, there is just so much to see and do. I still have Bondi Beach to get to as well.

Australian Museum

One of the first things I done was head to the Australian Museum. It sits on the corner of William Street & College Street. The ticket price is about $15, which isn’t too bad. There are a great variety of exhibitions on show. My favourite exhibition was definitely the dinosaur one despite half of it being closed for renovation. I was also intrigued by the wildlife sections, seeing all the different animals and learning about all the dangerous animals that Australia has to offer. I spent about 2 hours wandering around the museums 3 floors and had quite a nice wee day out.

Sea-Life Aquarium & Madame Tussauds.

One of my days in Sydney was spent at the Sea-Life Aquarium and the Madame Tussauds at Darling Harbour. There is also a Wildlife Zoo in the area too. I got my tickets online, that way you save a little instead of paying at the ticket office. Having your pass on your phone also means you don’t have to wait in line to collect a ticket. I managed to get a 2 attraction pass for $50. Anyway, into the Sea-Life Aquarium. There is plenty to see in the aquarium once you get past everyone, it was so busy – I went on a Monday as well, I can’t imagine how weekends must be. Because it was so busy, it all felt a bit rushed and the under-water tunnels were too packed to really enjoy it fully. It was still a nice thing to do regardless and I seen plenty of marine animals which kept me interested for an hour or so.

The Madame Tussauds was A LOT quieter… thank god. I managed to walk my way around without any major hold ups. The attention to detail on the wax works is incredible, some of them are really lifelike. It was pretty well laid out as well, different sections such as athletics, Hollywood and superheroes. At the moment there is a Justice League section – with an interactive Superman holding a helicopter! Of course I had a shot and a member of staff kindly took my picture for me. I had a really enjoyable time in the Madame Tussauds… a day well spent.

Hopefully now that I am partially settled in Sydney, I’ll be able to up-date the site a bit more and add some new things to it. If there is anything you would like to see – just leave a comment or fill out the wee enquiry form on the welcome page! I’m always looking to improve, it would be appreciated!
Anyway, that’s me for now, Thanks for reading!
One Love,
