If you’re planning on driving about Australia and/ or New Zealand, there’s a few free apps you should know about! They’ll help you save money and keep your sanity!
Campermate is a fantastic free app. My mate, Scot, told me about it after his road trip and it’s made my life so much easier! It primarily helps you locate the best camp site suited to your needs. It has 3 coloured sites;
- Purple – More Expensive Sites
- Blue – Mid Price Sites
- Green – Free Sites
All you need to do then is click on your desired site and it brings up a page with all the relevant information. You can filter the sites shown as well. Whether you need a site that takes self contained or non self contained.
Petrolspy is a free app and does it exactly what it says. It spies on the petrol prices and lets you know where the cheapest fuel station is. The name does say petrol but it gives you all fuel types! It’s an excellent app and could potentially save you a fortune on fuel!
Travello is another brilliant free app! It’s ultimately a Facebook for travellers. You can share your tales of adventure and your photos with others that are travelling. It also allows you to connect and message others too. Not to mention, it also shows you campgrounds, activities and a variety of other interesting features! It’s definitely worth having.
Spotify is free to download but costs a monthly fee for premium (no ads & downloadable content). This doesn’t really save your money but it does keep you sane! I couldn’t imagine driving for hundreds of kilometres without listening to music! Sure, you could use the radio but you’re rarely going to get a song you want.
Another free app that is brilliant. It’s a lot more accurate than the inbuilt weather for iPhone. It shows you 4 different settings; Rain, Radar (less accurate rain), Satellite (clouds) and snow depth. It works world wide and helps you keep an eye on the weather for the next 24 hours! It’s definitely been useful for us because we’re in wet season and it’s been raining constantly.
That’s the apps I mostly use on the road. Are there any other useful apps for an Australian road trip? What would you recommend?
